You'll Live in the Light
Persecution of Christians in China is steadily increasing. The trials and tribulations that church leaders face are becoming more violent, more intrusive, and more intentional. One recent account comes from a house church in Xi’an whose congregation had grown too large for its meeting space. To accommodate the growth, believers rented a hotel conference room and distributed leaflets outside to invite others to the service.
Soon after the worship gathering began, approximately 30 police officers and members of the Public Security Bureau surrounded the conference room. They stormed inside and forcibly confiscated books, Bibles, musical instruments, and every personal belonging — including phones and wallets. Interrogations began immediately and continued for hours inside the hotel. When the questioning ended, authorities transported the entire group to the local police station, where the interrogations resumed.
Ten pastors were imprisoned. Nine days later, four were released, while the remaining six continued to face intense pressure as officers attempted to build a case against them for “illegal gatherings.” During their incarceration, the church leaders were deprived of sleep and given very little food or water. Guards beat them regularly. By the time they were released — on the 37th day, after fervent prayer and the intervention of Christian lawyers — they were visibly scarred from the abuse they had endured.
Despite this, the Chinese government continues to claim that citizens enjoy religious freedom. Yet its actions speak far louder than its words. And through it all, the persevering church in China remains steadfast — trusting that God sees, sustains, and strengthens His people.
Psalm 16 declares:
“Therefore my heart is glad and my glory rejoices;
My flesh also will dwell securely.
For You will not abandon my soul to Sheol,
Nor will You allow Your Holy One to undergo decay.
You will make known to me the path of life;
In Your presence is fullness of joy;
In Your right hand there are pleasures forever.”
There will come a day when all suffering is over. Until then, the presence of the Lord completes our joy and sustains our faith.
