Ethiopia has a deep history of faith that reaches back to ancient biblical times. In 1 Kings, we read of the Queen of Sheba — present-day Ethiopia — who travelled to meet King Solomon and left astonished by the wisdom God had given him. In the Book of Acts, an Ethiopian eunuch experienced a life-changing encounter with the apostle Philip, who explained how Jesus fulfilled the prophecies in Isaiah. From the very beginning, Ethiopia has stood prominently in the biblical story.
Despite these strong roots, persecution of the evangelical church in Ethiopia has existed for decades. A harsh and abusive communist régime oppressed believers for many years. Yet through it all, the Lord remained faithful. His followers continued to spread the Gospel, stand firm in their faith, and sacrifice for the Kingdom.
Today, Ethiopia is experiencing a massive spiritual awakening — one that is touching every corner of the country. In one region populated primarily by Muslims, the Spirit of God is moving in extraordinary ways. During a celebration of Muhammad’s birthday — a day when Muslims devote themselves to fervent prayer — more than 6,000 Christian believers boldly shared the Gospel with their neighbours and friends. The response was miraculous. Over 6,000 individuals gave their lives to Christ and were baptized as new followers of Jesus.
It is always thrilling to hear stories of revival, but what is happening in Ethiopia is remarkable. The awakening is sweeping through entire Muslim communities. Disciples of Muhammad are turning to Christ as the fire of the Holy Spirit spreads.
In Acts 2:37 – 39, Scripture tells us:
“They were pierced to the heart… Peter said to them, ‘Repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call to Himself.’”
This same outpouring of the Holy Spirit is happening in Ethiopia today. God is calling men, women, and children to Himself. They are responding in faith, receiving the promise of eternal life, and stepping into the Truth that sets them free.
